Bloated possible ulcer tetra...

Hi

Wonder if anyone cold give some suggestions on a sick neon tetra.

Fish has bloated body and what appears to be a lump near rear end. See pic attached. Initially fish started swelling then swimming upside down and finally rested on bottom and only moves when disturbed. Breathing is erratic - fast some times and back to normal other times. Colour was good but red is slightly starting to fade now. Had this condition about 3-4 days at this stage

Initially thought it might be constipation or trapped wind so isolated fish in a plastic container at top of tank to stop feeding it and also reduce water pressure on fish but no joy. From reading other posts thought it may be a female that is pregnant but not preoducing and therefore will subsume eggs back into body however this fish is going will be two at Christmas and has never shown signs like this before.

My worry is this lump that appears to be forming near anus of fish. Its almost see through in colour

Other tetras are fine. Also have two plecos. I feed once a day. Water condition as follows:

ammonia 0 - 0.25 PPM
nitrite 0ppm
nitrate 0 - 5.0ppm

(Can never define the colours properly on the test cards but bascially all tests are pretty much close to zero) Also replaced the blue filter sponge and the green nitrate sponge in last few days. I am due a 30% water change this weekend.

Any advice appreciated. Out of a school of 12 tetra's i got in Xmas 2007 i still have 9 remaining and have really grown attached to these beautiful fish so hope can do anything to help them out when in trouble.

Thanks

Hello. I'm sorry to hear about your ill Neon. With your tank showing an ammonia reading I would do daily water changes of 30 to 50%, add some Prime or Ammo Lock to detox the ammonia for the 24 hours until it's time for your next water change. (if you can find these products in your area). Do this until your readings are 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites and 5-10 nitrates.
Looking at the picture your neon may be "pine coning" which is not good. Let's get some more responses on this. http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/di...eondisease.htm This link may help you as well.
Best wishes for you and your fish!

So hate to hear that you lost your Neon. I know it isn't easy and it's frustrating! Thanks for keeping us updated!
Hopefully the rest of the fish will be fine.
