7 Neon Tetras: no longer schooling

I just got 7 Neon Tetras a few days ago and at first they were schooling together with not too many problems. Well, one guy tended to swim off and hide by himself but later would join the big group.

This morning, I got up and saw the water was clearer and cleaner than ever but the neons were no longer schooling. Matter of fact, a couple of them started nipping at each other. Why would they "un-school" like that?

Hi welcome to Fish Lore
If you could fill in your aquarium info, it would help the members give you more accurate information.

Thanks for filling in your info.
In your other thread asking about cycling I gave some info about cycling that would be helpful here.
A couple of things could be happening.
They could be feeling the effects of a cycling tank. I gave recommendations in your other thread for that.

I've found neons to be fin nippers sometimes they have to prove whose boss. Once pecking order is established things may calm down. You can try and provide more hiding places for them to get away from each other.
Sometimes, it not unusual for them to go off by themselves if they're feeling safe. On the other hand, a fish will leave it's school and hide if it's not feeling well.

You really should get a test kit (mentioned in the other thread). Knowing your readings will help us give better info.
In the mean time, I'd suggest a water change if you haven't done one today.

Good luck and post some pics when you get a chance. We'd love to see your tank.

So do people on fish lore love seeing pictures of people's tanks?

And, is it normal for tetras to go through that stage during the cycling tank time? I haven't had any problems with that.
