Fish that school with neons?

I am about to purchase a 20 gallon tank and I am torn on whether to get cherry barbs or neon tetras. Do these two species school together or is it just best to leave them with others of their kind?

lol Shawnie, pull that 20g long out of your shed.

I've read that as long as fish are about the same shape and size, there's a chance that they'll school together.

Neons are really pretty, you may be happier with a larger school of them to get a nice effect rather than mixing.

I've got 10 cardinals in my 30, it's fun to watch but I wish I had more of them

They won't really school together, but they can certainly live together. You could do 6 and 6, or just 12 of the neons (depending, of course, on what else you plan on stocking).

If you want fish that really school tightly, look into rummynose tetras and see if you like them. They are the tightest schooling fish I've kept.

Thanks for all of the advice, I think I'm getting 10 neons and I'll put one of my 2 current plecos in with them. Will the neons look decent and be alright with plants and blue green gravel?

whahooo love the neons...but they are a blue green color so the gravel color might not make them stand out as much

I think they'll so pretty swimming among plants
It's hard for me to picture fish against different color gravel.
aquascaping isn't a strong point for me. lol
Hope you'll post some pics when you get up and running.
