neon tetra feeding question

do neon tetra come up to the surface when you drop in floating flakes? 2 days ago i got used, well established 10G tank. And i put 6 neons there. it seems are my neons are not eating anything. they are in the mid level swimming and when i put food on the top they dont even care. i dont even see them eating much when food drops down. I am sooo used to seeing danios come up to the surface begging for food and eating. Neon dont even seem to care about food.
how and what do you feed them? is this normal they are kinda ignoring food? and not coming to surface? or are they sick?

This is normal in my experience. Your neons have not gotten used to your tank yet.... just give them some time and they will settle down. It should be a few days to a week, but sometimes it can be longer. Do your neons have any tank mates that might be stressing them? How long has your tank been set up? Can you post test results for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate?

Honestly, I'd just give them time at this point. If they don't eat in the next few days then I'd worry a little bit.

I keep neons..........and my advice to you is never to leave food floating or feed them with floating food. It messes them up. They'll take in air and have a hard time swimming........you would see them swimming at a bad angle and having a really hard time keeping themselves from floating up like a helium balloon.

That aside.............for shy and new neons to a tank, try feeding them in the morning. Right at around sunrise to sunrise is when they are the most active. As long as the water is good and they are not stressed, as mentioned already, they are probably not used to your tank. Pre soak your food so it drops or as I do with clean hands, I stick the food into the water with my fingers and let it go.

Neons taking food from the surface=trouble.
