pale neons
Sometimes my one neon seems to go a really pale colour. Though sometimes he's normal. Does this happen to all neons or could something be wrong with him?

When fish turn pale, that usually indicates stress. Your neon may be coming down with something. Watch him closely.

yeah - my neons ( i have 2 in a 1.5 gallon tank) are like always pale - r they overly stressed?

I have about 9 neons in my 55 gal. and I notice in the morning when I first turn on my tank lights, they are extremely pale, but by the time I get home from classes, they are extremely vibrant.
I'm not sure what causes this, but my logical conclusion is that at night when fish are "sleeping", their body temperature may lower, circulation and heart rate may slow down, thus reducing their coloration. But, once the lights come on and they become more active, their heart rate and circulation goes up and their coloration returns bright as always.
Mind you, I am not absolutely sure about this, but it just seems like this is what happens with my neons.
However, when do you notice yours are really pale? Does it just happen out of nowhere in the middle of the day?
I hope this makes sense and I'm not just talking out of my ***!!

 U are on track, however I never knew fish could lower their body temperature! I thought they were cold blooded.....Sorry, I'm being a wise acre.....
It is totally normal for neons and cardinal tetras to loose color in the dark.
However if during the day this happens, and just to one fish, I would worry it is being stressed, or is sick. |

I am VERY Glad I read this..
My White Clouds do the same thing. At night they will turn very pale and it always freaks me out. I am sooo relieved to see that it's normal for them to turn pale!

I notice this with my rummy nose tetras. When I come home in the morning and give them their morning feeding (they're not the only one's in the tank), their noses are pale, and after 5-10 min they're red again.

EDIT: I just had a thought. I wonder if it's so they blend in more to their surroundings at night, instead of being bright and vibrant and standing out to predators in the wild? |

Maybe Miley, the tank is a little on the small side as it should only house one 1.5 inch fish... Also neons are schooling fish and two does not make a school so it is possible that your fish are stressed... |

If you only have one neon in your tank it is quite possible that it is stress. Neons are schooling fish and become quite skittish and stressed if they are by themselves. What other fish do you have in the tank? |
