aggressive neons

I did a water change yesterday - sorry I can't do math. I have a 28 gallon tank and I removed/replaced 2.5 gallons. This morning my neons have gone nuts. I have five of them. The four largest have each staked off a spot and won't let anyone else into their section. The smallest one, who is quite a bit smaller than the other ones is participating. He just has been what I call "exploring." Did the water change make them crazy? I had no ammonia or nitrite this morning. The ph was a litte different. Yestereday it was between 7.5 and 8.0. Today it was bewteen 7.0 and 7.5. There was somewhere between 0 and 20 nitrate today and yesterday. There was less nitrate today.

Did you add dechlorinator to the water? Is the temperature the same? I have never seen neons be aggressive before.

Temp has been a steady 78 since I set up aquarium. I used distilled. My water is really really hard. If I use it, I use dechlorinator/dechloramine in it.

Sorry, I can't be of more help. I haven't ever experienced this with my neons. Hopefully someone who knows more will respond. Good Luck!

I have 3 neons. When I added 2 more, the fin nipping started. 2 ended up dying.
Now that I am back to 3, they will go between hanging out together or chasing each other, but since no damage is done anymore, I don't worry about it.
COBettaCouple suggested a couple of things in another thread.

I hope this helps you. Good luck.

i'd say something's up with the pH - going down .5 pH might not seem like much - it's only half, right? but pH is on a log scale, so even a small amount is actually a large change. do you think that might be it? also, if you're using distilled water, do you add anything to your tank?
