Sick Neon?

I have gone thru all the neon threads and no one answered BettaBuddy's question (Dec.) and now I have the same question:
"the top of my neon seems to be black and he is constanly opening his mouth (chewing-like motion). i don't know what wrong is he getting sick?"

I only got him yesterday with one other neon and an oto. The affected neon hasn't been swimming with the other neon and showed no interest in eating. I read the info on neon tetra Disease. If it is that, I caught it earlier than some of the noted symptoms so do I need to clean the tank out?---I don't want to risk my other fishes and frogs. I am moving the affected one to a small container (don't have a quarantine tank.)

I would appreciate any feedback! Thanks!

Re: Sick Neon?

Hi M. I am really sorry that I can't be of much help. I don't have any neons.

If I were you, I would check the neon sectoin of the forum for someone who appears experienced with neons, and I would PM them to direct them to this thread.

One generic thing about sick fish is that indeed it's good to quarantaine them. Warmer water tends to be better for sick tropical fish too, so a spare heater to use in that container would be great, as would a filter.

I am sorry that I can't be of more help, and I hope my suggestion of pm'ing an expert will help.

Re: Sick Neon?

Thanks Laure-Anne,

I'm not sure that I can post directly to someone, still being a "fish bum" and all. I know I couldn't directly reply to Carol for that reason, but I will look into it.

About quarantining, for a new fish, how long would you quarantine it before you put it into your regular tank?

Thanks again,

-M

P.S. I think your name is beautiful. My middle name is Anne. I can see why friends would want to name their children after you! Enjoy the weekend!

Re: Sick Neon?

Thanks for the compliment, M!

No problem about the pm'ing suggestion. If you find a name that you feel can help you, I'll pm them for you and ask them to look at this thread. Sometimes there are so many threads they may not know this is one they can help on.

People suggestion 4 to 5 weeks' quarantaine, but I personally have never done it. Perhaps am taking stupid risks. I leave sick fish in the hospital tank for at least 1 week after they're fixed up.
