Cleaning Salt stains

I have a 55 gallon set up that I got at a yard sale. One of the challenges in getting it running is that it has dried salt all over the inside of the tank and around the edges of the equipment. I will be using the tank for freshwater till I have more experience in the hobby. How can I safely clean the stains? Just water and elbow grease? Will soaking help? Baking Soda? I know no soap, but thought you might have a helpful hint or two. Thanks very much!

Re: Cleaning Salt stains

Soaking and elbow grease will probably get most of it off. If you can outside with a water hose is the easiest way Have fun

Re: Cleaning Salt stains

It may be a hard water buildup (calcium carbonate) rather than marine salt. Marine salt should come off pretty easy with water, but if not vinegar should help dissolve the calcium carbonate deposits, but the elbow grease may still be needed to.

Re: Cleaning Salt stains

Yeah, it is likely hard water buildup- thanks for the tip! I hadn't thought of vinegar!
