reptile tanks for fish tanks?

neighborern it before, my old nehbore Had a 55 cage and he sealed it and it worked,
it was half full though, i saw a good sized one at reptile haven, i compared the glass thickness to a close sized aquarium ate my LFS,
and it was the same thickness,
could this work?, only b/c repti-tanks are much cheaper.
i know all about the sealent and stuff, ive done it before, but i wanted a suggestion or 2 from a more experienced aqua-hobbiest,
help/suggestions/anything please :]]
thanx

Re: reptile tanks for fish tanks?

Generally, the glass used for reptile cages is not designed to hold the weight filling it with water would put on the glass.
It MIGHT hold for a while, but I would not chance it.

Re: reptile tanks for fish tanks?

wut if i ordered glass and put it in the center?
or if i made a special hood,
with notches on the the outer sides,?
but then after all that i would have only saved 20-40 bucks but wasted some time,
but would that make a differenc?
thanx

It is worth the extra money to buy a product designed for holding water, instead of saving a few bucks, modifying something not designed to hold water, and then down the raod, coming in to find your modifications did not work.

I wouldn't do it. Water pressure is a very tricky thing when it comes to tensile strength and glass.....It might hold for a while, but generally speaking it's probably best to purchase another one made for aquarium use.
