I have heard a lot of people saying that TSS did not work for them. So I just wanted people to know it worked for me just fine. 5 days ago I used TSS to cycle my tank. What I did was I emptied the entire bottle of TSS into my tank. It was a 3.38oz bottle good for up to a 30 gallon tank. (I have a 16 gallon tank) After adding the TSS I imediately added my fish (within 30 secs.) Today I tested my water and Amonia was at 0, nitrite was 0 and nitrate was under 5.

My guess for when this doesnt work for people, is that they Either A. Dont add fish immediately or B. They add too few fish (if any) and it doesnt keep the bacteria alive, or They add too many fish and it over whelms the bacteria.
I personally added five and that seems to have worked. I'll do a water change after 10 days has passed.

It's been a while since I've cycled a tank without media, but when I did I used a bottle and had great success as well. Couldn't tell you what product it was, but it worked.

It's always good to share your experience with a product.
There's been some dicussion about what water conditioners are best to use or avoid with TSS.
Which one did you use?

Hello FishNugget. Congrats on the TSS cycle! Glad to hear it. Question: Did you set the tank up and condition it (to remove chlorine) 24 hours before adding the Tetra Safe Start? Did you use the Tetra Aqua Safe as your conditioner?

Yes I used the Water conditioner Tetra AquaSafe, I believe it was 4 days before adding the TSS... It could have been 3 days though, I think it was 4. Also my Tap water reads all zeros to start.

I set up my tank last night and used Tetra Aqua Safe. I plan on adding 4-6 fishes tomorrow with the big bottle of TSS that treats 75g in my 29g tank. Nice to hear that it worked for you and gives me more confidence.

I have a 75 G that I was trying to cycle with fish. ( 4 black skirt and 2 white skirt tetras). Last Friday I ended up adding a dose of TSS for 90 gallons. I Aslo added 4 more fish at that time. I am going to test the water for the first time tomorrow and I am hoping it is cycled. All the fish have lived and seem fine this week so I am hopeful. I'll let you know how my water tests come out.



I went down this morning and checked the water. ammonia and nitrite were 0 and nitrate was 10. TSS worked for me in 7 days. I had a cycle already started because I had some fish in before I added the TSS but it was still in the early stages as I had not had ammonia over .5 and never did have a nitrtite reading before the TSS.
