Welcome to the site.
The light is for you, fish will do fine with the light from the room. The lights are there to show off your tank, unless of course you have plants.

welcome to fishlore!!!!!!
my fishys lounge around on the bottom and hiding spots when the lights are out..although Im sure they are smart enough to catch food in the dark, I have lights on for a few mins before I begin to feed...but I have no secondary lighting around so its all lights on for my fish....maybe its for me haha

What I mean is if the room is lighted, that should be enough to make the fish not lay around and do nothing. If you are asking if you should feed your fish in the dark, I wouldn't.

A number of fish feed based on smell, so I guess part of it depends on the type of fish/amphib. For fish like my livebearers...they're always trying to eat, so I don't think a light would make a difference either way. lol

My Danios feed by light cause if I feed right before lights go out the sinking pellets actually get eaten by the corys... lol

I normally have to switch off my air stones and filter for at least 2 minutes for my fish to eat. Otherwise, the water current would just tire them for chasing the food around. LOL but I still leave the lights on during feeding time.
