cheap gravel

Well sort of, Home Depot sells bags of rocks for extremly low prices. These are indended to be used on your lawn, but they do sell some small and round enough to use for fishtanks. My boyfriend got me enough to redecorate my 40gal with, and it was only $4. They were incredibly dusty so there was alot of rinsing, but once they were clean they were gorgeous.

Re: cheap gravel

Yep I have used an awful lot of the small pea gravel from Lowes. After rinsing works great, in fact thats what is in all my gravel tanks.

Re: cheap gravel

I suppose you could boil it but I just rinse it with really really hot water.

Re: cheap gravel

No I didn't boil it , just rinsed it really well.
ATM i got it in their patio dept. A salesperson can direct you to it. Just ask for peagravel.

Re: cheap gravel

Ok I might do that as I'd like natural looking gravel and might switch overr xmass break.

Re: cheap gravel

My bf got our rocks from the dollar store.
They're very pretty... at least imo heh. I didn't go with him but I'm guessing they have a small selection of rocks to pick from since he came back with some really nice larger black rocks as well.

Re: cheap gravel

I just picked up a 50LB bag of Pea Gravel from Home Depot for $2.79. Extremely dirty out of out the bag, but after a lot (and I mean A LOT) of rinsing, it looks great. Thanks for the idea and tips.. I'm only using a small amount (for now), but even so, can't beat the value. Prices for 'aquarium gravel' at a fish store are downright ludicrous.

Some of them do have a decent selection. We picked up a lot of the flat marbles we're using at a big dollar store and clear ones in the crafts dept. of walmart, but we also saw a number of types of rocks at both places. The hardware store's a good idea too for the large tanks, we'll keep that in mind when we get a 55g.
