Chach's 55G Freshwater

So here it is my big jump from the 10g world.

These big boys take a while to fill!

Neways
I started with my bala sharks and transfered the 2 of them last night and I am currently transfering 2 of my guppies.

Ive got wild creek rocks that I have sanitized.
I also have some drift wood thats being difficult so im not sure when thatll be ready to go in the tank.

But give me some of your opinions or thoughts.
Im new to the big tank world so advice is welcome!

I'm going to make an observation, which is not intended to insult you:
Your tank looks empty.
Now, let's talk about what you can add to fill it out, without filling it up...

I think it would add alot to use a few tall plants. You can use artificial ones, they would be fine.
Get green colored ones. The pink and purple plants are fakie and take away from your fish's good looks.

Put three tall ones spaced along the back of the tank. Put the center one "off centered" to the left several inches.
You can add some smaller plants between or in front of them, if you like.
Put some of the rocks at their base to "ground" them.

Add plants a few at a time and see how they look.
You won't need to over plant it to make a big impact.

The main focus items should be in odd numbers: 1's or 3's or 5's or 7's... like that.

If you could get some more rocks, round and larger, they could go in there easily.
Larger rocks to the rear corners in front of the bubbles, with a few smaller ones flowing out from them. You don't have to stack them.

Do your sharks need cover? Some sort of fake log or stump might do the trick.
Or, pieces of slate leaned against the back of the tank will give them a place to hang out and rest.

By "being difficult" you mean that your driftwood is still giving off tannons or floating?

How big is the driftwood. You'll want to leave space for it, especially if it is large.
Put it forward of the intake tube to draw the eye away from the intake.
Even if it is short, it will be interesting and won't get in the way of filter circulation like a plant might.

When you get your tank aquascaped, fill it above the exterior trim just so the water line doesn't show.

I hope this has given you some ideas for your tank.
Congrats on going from a 10G to 55G! Enjoy it.

I was thinking some kinda nice short green stuff on the log that my fish could graze on that would be awesome... Ne Ideas on a plant to suit these needs?
Also the way I wanted to put my drift wood didnt allow for me to cover up the filter... Though I would like to!

I would like a stump like piece of driftwood (preferably real which may take a while or artificial for a temp fix) that could go in the other corner to kinda help remove the emptiness at the top...

A good living plant, that can be attached by sewing thread or fishing line (I've even stapled it to driftwood) is java fern, specifically
Wendelov (lace leaf java fern) the one lower left corner in the photo:

Don't worry about it not being right in front of the filter intake.
Your driftwood distracts the eye well enough.

Some of the artificial "stumps" look pretty realistic, especially after some mossy algae has grown on it.

I like the changes in your tank already.
Keep experimenting with the layout by adding and removing until you get the look you're after.
Have fun,

Your tank looks awesome! I just did a 55g myself. I am hoping to remove some of my artificial plants with some real ones! Great job.

Maybe a type of cabomba or even water sprite?
Hard to tell. Can you get a close up of the plants?

If you mean the one in the middle of the photo, then that looks like a fern that PetSmart sells as "true aquatic".
I'm afraid it is not.
It's called Borneo fern or Trichomanes javanicum.
It will live for a little while in your tank, but will die and you won't know it because it will still be green.
I'd remove it right away and plant it in a terrarium.
hth,
alicem
ps, the reason I know about it is that I've bought it before too.

It's pretty agravating when the manufacturer puts right on the label "true aquatic"
You think there'd be a "truth in advertising" law about it.

Anymore I stay with the ones I know for sure will grow under low light and that I've had luck with before.
Well... it's pretty for now.
