Tiger Barb Question

I just have one question... Ok, I had 5 tiger barbs, until I took the bully back today..since he about tore the other 4 to shreads... now they have no fins. The petstore told me they will grow back. My question is, how long does it usually take them to grow back?

Thnx,
Autum

Most of the time they will grow back, but if the damage is severe enough, some may not. Some folks will advise you to add Melafix to aid in regeneration, but IMO it isn't necessary. If you do extra water changes until they grow back and keep your water quality pristine, the fins will grow back more quickly. Good luck!

Thank you, I appreciate it... they pet store person told me to add extra water conditioner to make it slimier, so it will help them grow back... the poor guys look horrible... About how long will it take estimated?

Thanks,

I don't think that will really help. If you'd like to use an additive, Melafix would be more beneficial than extra water conditioner (I assume your LFS person might be talking about Stress Coat... unnecessary product altogether IMO). Otherwise the best thing is super clean water like I mentioned.

I'm not sure how long it will take your barbs to grow their fins back, but I've had some pretty remarkable experiences with fin regrowth myself. For example, I recently bought 5 pygmy hatchetfish, and their caudal fins were all pretty ripped up from their LFS tank mates. I brought them home and did some extra water changes (my water changes are always 50-60%), and I've seen incredible growth just in the past 2 weeks. 3 of the hatchets look like their caudals were never nipped at all.

Wow! thats amazing... Yeah I did a water change today...about 10 to 20 percent, but I did add extra conditioner... so I guess Ill try your method and do several water changes and see what happens... I do appreciate your info

thanks,
