The "filter cartridge" is the cheap type that won't open to add activated carbon so what should I do now?

Yeah, tannin release must be causing yellowish water, its really noticable when I do a partial wc,"bailing it out."

I have that in one of my tanks also...but I think with my wood and plants it looks more natural lol ....its an eye sore to some people but it wont hurt anything and in time , water changes, and clean carbon it will go away

In an established tank what does carbon do? Like can it lower ammonia or at the least control it, in a first cycle tank or established tank?
And some good news the ammonia level dropped, but thats probably only until I do the next water change tonite.

as far as i know, carbon won't do anything for ammonia. it will just remove impurities in your water, i'm no scientist so i can't tell you exactly how it works, but hopefully someone else can give you a better explanation
