new tank precycled filter media swap

ok. i've got a 29 gallon i need to put my goldfish in. he is presently in my 29 bowfront with other tank mates.

i've had a 55 G aquaclear on my 29 since mid cycle, in addition to the regular 30G aquaclear.

i've had the bowfront cycled for probably 2 weeks now. finally....took awhile.

i think i can just take half my tank water and put it into the other tank and theoretically be doing a 50% water change on both tanks.

thing i wonder about is....will pullin that 55 filter off for my goldy tank throw my bowfront into a mini cycle? and will that have enough BB to cover my 29 goldy tank?

i realize i might just have to go thru 2 mini cycles, but it shouldn't be a FULL cycle on the new goldy tank, correct?

The water doesn't contain enough bacteria to help cycle a tank, it's not free floating, instead it grows on the filter media, gravel and decorations.

You can take one of the filters and put it on the new tank but keep an eye on your water parameters on both tanks. Goldies are big waste producers so I doubt that in 2 weeks the filter would have enough bacteria to sustain the tank.

yeah. kinda what i'm thinkin, but i need to get him out. and i was "cycled" prior, i just had a hazy tank that wouldn't clear for a couple weeks. so it's really been more like a month or so.

i've just always liked to use half old tank water and half new if i can. just to make sure my parameters are closer to what they were in. just to help acclimation.

maybe i'll set everything up and leave him out and feed it ammonia tonight and see what reading i get when i get home tomorrow night. see if it can digest ammonia fast enough.

if not, i'll just feed it a little ammo everyday until it can.

That's a good idea. If he's in a cycled tank now, I'd hate to see him go through a mini cycle.
I understand your point about the parameters being the same for him.

A good product to have handy is amquel+. It certainly doesn't replace water changes, but it does detoxify nitrates, ammonia and nitrites.. Your tests would still be + , however detoxified. Keep it in mind when you transfer the goldie. Its also good for finishing a cycle if you have fish and have thrown the towel in on wtaer changes. It's just hard to grasp because your tests are +. But by detoxifying the water your giving time for the bacteria to establish, remember every cycle needs ammonia to some degree. The goldie will shock a new tank tho so i'd be prepared with the amquel+. I luv goldies, i'll set up a tank one day,but i'm still learning about them.
