jumping fish

I'm getting really frustrated that when i'm acclimating fish, they jump out of the acclimation container. I tried putting on a lid while they're acclimating but i sometimes have to take it off when i add water. Before you know it, they're flopping on the floor and it's really hard to pick them up, especially the ghost shrimp. is this really bad for the fish? how can i stop it? this has happened too many times

I use something with tall walls, like a 1 gallon drink pitcher or a 5 gallon bucket. Are you acclimating them too quickly? I've never seen any of my fish even attempt to jump out...

Id use a plastic container that has higher walls also...its very bad for them as their slime coats can be totally worn off from the floor or your hands and then you could have major issues.....

thanks for the heads up on the slime coats, but they'll grow back won't they? I'll look into getting a tall acclimation cup. normally i acclimate them for an hour, they're calm at the end.

that's interesting, i've never had a fish try to jump out during acclimation, usually they're a bit stressed from the move so they just hang out on the bottom of the container for a while.

you could try a lid with holes in it so you could still transfer water.

i guess it's just MY fish then I'd better stop feeding whatever's making them jump

that's a great idea.

if most of the fish you're trying to acclimatise attept to jump out of the container then you more then likely have bad problems with your water or the water you're adding them to is WAY different then the water they're in.. as in pH is far different, nitrates, ect.

you'll need to test everything first, both your water and the water they come in.. if there's major differences then you need to acclimatise them alot slower

It can't be that, they always jump before adding different water. in fact, the new water calms them.
