Im not sure on the exact number but you will be able to overstock it to reduce aggression also it will depend on the type of species (there are many and some dont go well with others so its good to do your research) also good filtration will be needed to accommodate a overstocked cichlid tank.

that really depends, there are a LOT of different types of cichlids from a lot of different locations. i honestly don't know very much about them individually, but you'll notice that there are malawi, tanganyika, managuenese, most of the time these cichlids come from specific lakes, and you really can't mix the types. i suggest you do lots and lots of research while your tank is cycling on the different types, how many you can keep, etc.

like everyone else said, PLEASE don't use fish to cycle, it exposes them to levels of ammonia and nitrite that they cannot handle.

So i'm a little confused. I'm getting rid of all of my fish. Starting clean. how do i start the cycle without the fish and how long do i wait and all that fun stuff before getting my cichlids?

Tetra SafeStart is a good way to do an "instant cycle" if you don't want to wait a few weeks to cycle your tank.
Other ways include "feeding" your tank pure ammonia, or fish food.

Also, what type of cichlids? African? South/Central American?

Once you find a home for your existing fish it's important that you understand the Nitrogen Cycle
Here is the Ammonia instructions fishless cycle.

While you're cycling with out fish, you'll have plenty of time to research what fish you'd like.
