| | Fish Lore Newbie | Fish Suicide Sounds crazy, but I was standing here watching fishies swim around and 1 of the Glowlight Tetra's went "flying" across the tank straight into the side and killed itself. Have had it for several weeks and has been fine. I immediately got him out and in a cup to see if he was simply stunned or gone...after about 5 minutes, it appears that he is gone. Is this common? |

| | Fish Keeper | I have seen a couple of my fish crash into things now and again - They always seem to be fine after a second or two recoiling from the impact.
It's usually my bigger fish - the bala sharks; they sometimes get excited and swim into the heater. I always feel so bad for them - especially the last time as he scratched his head on the clip holding the heater in place.
Sorry you lost your fish in this way - I guess it does happen but at least it was through no fault of your own. Last edited by Steve113; January 17th, 2009 at 03:57 PM.

| | Fish Keeper | That happened to one of my cories. It was so scary. I guess I just scared her or something because she had like a seizure. It was awful, I'm sorry it happened to you. |

| | Moderator | It happens, usually because a fish is scared. This might be due to a trick of aquarium glass (lots of glass and bright lights sometimes create mirrors), or it might be due to tankmates.
It doesn't look like your tank is severely overstocked, so it may have just been a trick of light. |

| | Fish Keeper | The fish would not have seen the glass due to what SDS said, that or momentum meant he couldn't stop in time.
Unfortunate reality in fishkeeping. Thankfully it doesn't happen to me too often |

| | Fish Lore Newbie | Perhaps a blessing in disguise...I figured with the stuff that I am going through with water balance, I would go ahead and do a change a few hours early. I found a very strange creature (not usre what but will keep you posted) when I "cleaned" filter media. He was in the bucket of drained tank water. Before dumping, I better check to make sure that there are no more and I found 9 fry in there as well. I am assuming that they are from the Danios and have gotten them in a breeder net. Sad that I lost one, but also excited that there are more. Emotions!! |

Have you got a photo? or could you describe it for me? | Have tried to get picture, but no luck as it is too small to get camera focused. Description: about 10mm long, "tail" is about 5mm and "body" is about 5mm. Appears to have 6 legs on "body". I thought that it may somehow be a baby Ghost Shrimp, but it moves its rear end like a fish. It also has 3 "hairs"(??) protruding from rear.
Just found a picture that closely resembles it. Maybe a Mayfly Nymph?? http://www.seanet.com/~leska/Online/Guide.html Last edited by DHoff; January 18th, 2009 at 11:30 AM.

The other "creature" was in the media, but the fry was more than likely in the gravel. 99.9% sure that they are Zebra Danios that somehow survived. They are only approx 2-3mm long. |
