twitchy fish

I have this 20 gal with mostly bottom feeders (4 Panda corys, 1 Peppered cory, 1 mystery snail, 4 small tetras) Everyone will twitch on occasion - tetras obviously they're twitchy by nature but the corys will have these weird moments where their whole body will twitch like something itches - it doesn't happen all the time and everyone seems healthy and vigorous but I just thought it was kinda strange. the only thing that is out of the ordinary is the panda's little barbels have worn down to nubs (no infection that I can see) and I just today added sand to their substrate to flatten the landscape out a bit (so far they seem to love it!)
pH 6.8-7.0
nitrate 2.0
nitrite and ammonia 0

they don't seem to scratch on anything it's more like all of a sudden they'll twitch and their whole body twists for a second then they go about their business like usual

hmmm I am not sure why they are doing it but it isn't normal!! could it be some kind of parisite?? or water quality issue?? for sure something is irritating them.

I just checked bottle and it's an API liquid test kit - no expiration date on bottle but a 2006 copyright mark on bottom of label. I went to 2 different petstores and all their API kits have a 2007 copyright date on box and 2006 date on bottles inside. Of course the store guy tries to tell me that because they are still shipping these test kits out to them that they must be fine - Yah like the little bettas they have lined up 3 jars deep in only 3" of blue water are fine!!!
I don't mean to bash these stores so harshly but they all seem to know NOTHING! They're in it just for the sell!
sorry about the rant - anyway they also have Red Sea test kits but the expiration date is kinda confusing one said 01 10 9 and another said 08 10 9
Any ideas on deciphering that?

As for my cory babies - it really doesn't seem like anything is majorly irritating them - they don't twitch alot - it's more like a weird little quirk every once in a while but I would like to get a good ammonia test to make sure that's not the problem!

look at the ammonia bottle and on the top right hand corner there are lot numbers...the last four numbers are the month and year it expires...or should be sold by..either way, i was getting funky readings as well until I updated my kit ...goodluck either way tho!

Ok, sorry, but I just wanted to say, the title 'Twitchy Fish' just made me laugh. It's cute.
I hope it's just as simple as an expired testkit!
Best of luck to you!

im sorry aecw...theres alot of people who have told me this...here on fishlore as well as here at home....not that its the issue, but its hard for me to rely on something thats very important when its outdated goodluck anyhow and I hope things get better..whenever theres a doubt, I stick with a weeks worth of daily water changes with prime...at least that make me feel better...
