Left over food can cause mold/fungus to grow if left in the tank, it's best remove any left over food as soon as possible.
If there's that much left, he may be overfeeding it.
What kind of suckerfish is it?

You might want to find out what kind it is. If it's a common pleco, they grow huge and it can happen fast, so you'll want your nephew to prepare for that.

Is it just on the substrate? You can use a gravel vacuum when you do the water changes.

When you get it cleaned up, you can use a turkey baster to remove any uneaten food in between cleanings.

Your nephew might want to consider taking the pleco back or giving it to someone with a large tank.
It grow over a foot long and it's recommended they be kept in at least a 55g.
They're awfully cute when they're small.

yehp, I agree with Lucy.

I have a 24" pleco in my 200 gallon tank right now, and my 350, I just took out the larger one and put in a small royal pleco they look beautiful when they are still very small

Also they are massively expensive :S
