Tank Problems, PLEASE HELP ME!!!

I just bought a 10 gallon aquarium, and while I was cycling it (which I still am) I realized the the temperature was to high, so I lowered the temperature on the heater. I set it for 77 degrees Fahrenheit, but my thermometer is saying it's 82 3 hours after I changed the temperature, so I don't know if I should buy a new thermometer or heater. I really need help!!!

It may take a little while to let the water cool down to 77...should be okay tonight or maybe in the morning.
