sandy tank bottom

would it harm a betta or the filter to have sand in his tank. would he swallow any sand? likewise would it harm snails, crabs, or other bottom feeders?

No it won't hurt them to have sand in their tank.

that's good, I thought the snails or shrimp might try to eat the sand....how does one clean the sand anyway?

You carefully hover your gravel vac just above the sand where the suction picks up the crud instead of the sand.
