Auto Feeders

We are going out of town and have an automatic feeder. It doesn't seem to work right though because water gets into where the food is and the food begins to stick together and mold. Any suggestions.

Can you raise it farther away from the tank...perhaps place it on a block of wood?

Alright new question. It has a knob to adjust 12 hrs and 24hrs. I realize it is automatic but how does it know when it is time to release food.
