the 55 gallon i found on the side of the road has a small chip in the corner of the glass it is being held in by the silicone is it safe or would this be desastaropus if i filled it up and it leaked everywhere? what can i do to make it more water worthy?

If it is only the silicone holding it in it is not safe. Best idea would be to fill it up outside in your yard and leave it for an hour or two, and even that would not guarantee that it would hold water in the longterm.

you could try leaving it filled up for a few days and see if it's not able to hold water without leaking but it does sound like it's risky and perhaps the tank could find good use with reptiles or other small animals?

OHHH Hermit Crabs!!! Or a turtle!! My BFFs in WI have turtles well they did - they found 2 on the side of the road and found one at the zoo .... They named them Taz, Checkers and Roxy but Taz and Checkers died so now they have Roxy. They are great!!

it isnt like the corner where 3 pieces of glass meet its only at the seam where the side and the back meet im thinking of epoxying it inthe chip is on the outside

If I were you I'd use a food safe silicone (even though it is on the outside), and do the cycling (go with the slower natural cycling rather than sponge piece/switched filters) and by the time its done cycling if it is still fine it should hold up. Just weigh the small risk of crashing versus what you value your stock to be both monitarily and sentimentally.

Why don't you just but some of the aquarium sealent and fix it, I don't think it would be too hard. If someone has already suggested it, sorry, I am really too tired to go and read them all over again.

It dosen't leak i'm just worried about it being filled up and then 4 weeks into the cycle i have 55 gallons all over my floor with fish i cant put anywhere and rotting bacteria smelling the place up. really tom you dont need to reply to people in such un-courteous ways.

do you have a back porch or some area that's concrete that you could cycle the tank on? that'd give you a chance to see if it would leak. And when you set it up inside you could set it on top of towels so if you did spring a leak down the road, you could avoid a huge disaster.
