Sand or gravel?

RIght now I have a a 30g community tank, and I plan on getting another 30g tank tommorrow. I want to use sand, and I was wondering if it would be safe to put the sand in a tank with cichlids and snails, some ghost shrimp for snacks...

Just wondering. Maybe its a bad idea...first time using the sand.

Re: Sand or gravel?

What kind of fish are you planning to have in it? How many? People do use sand in their tanks so it's not a bad idea at all. As long as it will be OK for your fish species, of course.

As for snails, I honestly don't know if they like tanks with sand.

Re: Sand or gravel?

Well I was going to put cichlids in the tank with the sand....more of an aggressive freshwater tank....

You mean African Cichlids? I don't know too much about them but I think they like sand, caves, and rocks

Re: Sand or gravel?

Most snails are okay with any kind of substrate. Burrowing snails, such as Malaysian Trumpets, actually prefer sand, as it's easier to dig through.

Re: Sand or gravel?

yep sand will be fine. if you get play sand remember to rinse it thoroughly or it will cloud your tank for awhile. on the other hand pool filter sand doesn't have to be rinsed.
