breeding live food in tank?

I'm wonder, can you keep live food (Daphnia, bloodworms etc...) in a tank with fishes so that you don't have to feed the fishes because you have an unlimited amount of live food in the tank?

i think you would need a way to keep the fish from being able to get to them, except at feeding time or they would overeat until the live food was gone.

Re: breeding live food in tank?

My question is why you don't want to have to feed your fishes! Feeding my fishes is the highlight of my day sometimes. They are so cute when they eat

You can culture daphnia, vinegar eels, etc in separate containers to feed to your fish, but I don't know of any ways to culture them in the tank.

If you are going away or don't have time to feed your fish all the time, I suppose you could look at an automatic fish feeder. I've seen these for sale before, especially for people going on short vacations, but I've never used one so I don't know exactly how they work.

Re: breeding live food in tank?

I have seen contraptions that set you breed brine shrimp in such a way that when they mature they will swim up and into the main tank...but other than that I think the fish would just gorge themselves.

:-)
