I have a small 5 gallon tank with 2 male mollies. I keep salt in the water for mollies. I want to add one bottom feeder to help clean up the leftovers. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I don't have a lot of room, but I am also wondering whether there are any other small fish that that might also like the salty water?

I can't think of any bottom feeders that like salty water. Maybe somebody else will think of something

ive got 3 mollies and recently put in a dwarf gurami (however you spell it) and they have done nothing but peck at it.im trying to find a fish to go at the bottom aswel.

Mollies need a lot of salt in their water, and catfish won't tolerate salt. Many people recommend keeping Mollies in a species tank (one w/ only 1 species of fish). Other livebearers are the only fish I can think of that will be OK in the almost brackish water Mollies need. I'm not sure if Dwarf Gouramis are OK with salt or not. Maybe some barbs would be OK too, I'm not sure.

I know of several people who have mollies (I have swords) as well as bottom feeders and do not add salt to the water. My sister in law's mollies are spawning for the 3rd time without salty water.....Much of the time I've seen advice to omit the salt as it's really not needed.

I've got green swordtails, no salt on their second spawn in just over a month......I also have 3 emerald corys. No salt for them either. From what I have read, most if not all bottom feeders cannot tollerate salt.

You don't need salt for mollies at all;

They won't have been bred in salt water and they certainly won't have been kept in salt water at your LFS.

I have 3 dalmation mollies and have never added salt to the tank

Hmmm, I guess you're right about the breeder and lfs probably not adding salt. Now that I think about it, adding salt to water of common pet-store Mollies may not be that important. I would still not recommend breeding them in saltless water, since Mollies are technically brackish fish.

You wouldn't be able to stop them breeding in a tank without salt anyway. They wouldn't even take mollies from the wild anymore since they are so esy to breed and would have been bred so often in saltless water they dont need it. So just stop adding the salt and do some water changes until there is very little to no salt in the water then add some catfish

Ya i have 3 mollys in my 30gal. I have never added salt at all. so u should listen to J-man.
