Re: molly staying at top

what is your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels now? How much aeration does the tank have? Any other physical signs of trouble with that molly? does she seem to be breathing hard or red around the gills? Does she eat? Are her eyes cloudy? Do you have a smaller tank to isolate her in and treat her when we figure out her problem?

Re: molly staying at top

From what we've observed with our Mollies, if they're sick, they'll stay at the bottom of the aquarium and not move around much.. of all the livebearers we have (Mollies, Platties and Swordtails/Helleries), Mollies are prone to doing just what you've described, going up to the top of the water level and looking like they're trying to breathe air like Bettas.
Unless he/she is showing signs of a recognisable disease like Ich or Fungus, or is swollen (and not pregnant in the case of a female), I wouldn't worry too much, but I would advise monitoring him/her closely.. also, if he/she is the only Molly you have, you may want to consider adding some more Mollies according to the size of your aquarium, since Mollies are schooling fish and so don't do too well on their own.
As long as you're doing your regular water changes and have enough air going into your aquarium, I wouldn't worry too much, but please keep an eye on him/her.
