Is My Mollie Pregnant?

Help! I just got my Mollie fish a few weeks ago and I don't know if she is pregnant. I feed her freeze dried bloodworms and sun dried () baby water shrimp. The light to the tank is on almost all day so I don't know if that has anything to do with that. The store I got her from is Walmart, they got good fish. I have a small 5 Gallon tank and if my fish does have babies, where would I keep them? The only thing I can come up with is a big glass bowl. Anyways, here are some pictures of the fish. There are two pictures so you can tell if she is pregnant easier. She is the black and white spotted one.

Hi Fishtastic, Welcome to Fishlore! Your Molly is a Male, so it's safe to say he's not pregnant. It's a very nice looking fish though!

Hi Fishtastic!

Yep, Nick's correct. Your molly is most definitely a male. I think he's beautiful, too! Thanks for the pictures.

Your molly may be a little constipated, which is common when they are fed freeze-dried foods. If you thaw 1 frozen pea, cut out a tiny piece the size of his eye, and feed him just the thawed piece of pea twice a day for a few days, he'll look less pregnant. Mollies actually need vegetable flakes... much more so than shrimp or blood worms. Walmart sells veggie flakes in their fish section.

Your tank is a bit small for him, so you definitely don't want to put any more fish in with him, not even a small one. Your fish will be much happier and healthier if you change about a gallon of water every day, so he doesn't suffer from poor water conditions. Don't forget to add just enough water conditioner to clean the newly added water.

Best of luck!!

Thanks. I will try to get him some veggie flakes next time I go to walmart. I will also ry to change a bit of the water soon, it is in need of a water cange.

I'm wondering if algae wafers are similar to veggie flakes? I feed my corries and algae eaters a few each night and my mollies and platty's both join the feast. It's very fun to watch!
