Babies!

I knew my dalmation molly gave birth this week, but couldnt find any fry in the tank. I figured they were all eaten and that's really why I bought the mollies in the first place was to produces feeders. Today I was doing my weekly WC and found 2 babies buried in the gravel. I decided to try to save them but by the time I got out the nursery net, I couldnt find them anywhere. I later saw one, but again, by the time I got the net, I'd lost him. I know my plan was to make them feeders but they were so tiny and cute, I'd like to try and raise a couple. It would be really neat if they survived hungry catfish and silver dollars and grew to be adults!

it takes a long time for them to become an adult. i have a batch of mollies that are 15 weeks old and aren't even an inch long. breeding livebearers is so much fun though.

here's a little tip, if you have a spare tank (as small as 5 gallons) you could put the pregnant female in there until she gives birth, it's a lot better than breeder nets.

good luck

My eagle eyed grandson spotted 2 babies in the plants tonight. We put up the nursery net and caught them both. There was much excitement over this (5 grandkids in all) and now you can barely see anything in my tank because of all the fingerprints on the glass! The oldest (the one that spotted them) seems to have a real interest in fishkeeping. He's 10 and wants to get a tank of his own. I told him if his parents set one up for him and these babies survived, he could have them.
