Why are my fish gulping the water at the surface?

I have read b4 somewhere that when your fish go to the surface and gulp it means that they do not have much oxygen and that I needed to buy an air pump. Well I did just that and they are still doing it not as much and actually only a few of them are doing it now, instead of all of them. Why are they doing this? I have a 10 gallon tank w/ 2 anglefish 2 platies, 2 balloon mollies and 2 dalmation mollies. I have a heater and a filter w/ an air pump as well. I do not have a kit yet to check the water b/c of money issues at the moment but I have been changing 50% of the water every 2 days. btw I have had my fish for 4 days now!

Its probably ammonia..and until you have a test kit, you cant be sure...id change the water every day with some prime/stress coat+/ or ammo lock until you know for sure... its not going to change unless you get a bigger tank or return some of your fishies for the 10 gal, your mollies and platys will be ok everything else will be too big for that size tank...you can check craigslist.org for some great deals tho!

Well first of all your tank is way over stocked and not cycled. I would call the store where you bought everything and tell them you want to return the fish. There is no way all 8 fish can survive in a ten gallon. If the person at the fish store told you they could then you got some bad advice and that would be what I would tell them to get them to give you your money back.
