my new baby mollys

Hi, I'm new to this this website and a new mom to black baby mollys. Tonight my black molly had (as close to we can count so far) 56 baby mollys with only 3 non live births. We currently have the baby's in a nursery (mom already released and babies finished being born about 3 hrs ago). Do the babies need to stay in an aquarium with a filteration system and nursery or can I put them in a goldfish type bowl by themselves until they are big enough (they are all at least 1/4" long already)??

They really need to stay in an aquarium ith filtration and heat. I would not put them in a goldfish bowl. Sounds like they are good size but I would not put them back in with their parents until they would not fit into the parents mouth. As bad as it sounds they will eat them right up. And when you do put them back in make sure they have somewhere to hide...plants, decorations, moss. Good luck and congrats on your new babies!!

hello and welcome to fishlore

congrats on the new mollies! your babies will definitely need a filtration system, a goldfish bowl is near impossible to keep the water quality good and can't really be heated either. your fry will need extremely pristine water, as well as the correct temperature for them.

Welcome to Fish Lore
Congrats on the fry. I don't have live bearers but I think fry are really cute.
Make sure the filter isn't too strong for them. I've seem others recommend you cover the intake with a filter sponge or stocking so they don't get sucked up.

I agree....we'd love to see some pics

Gosh it's been years since I kept mollies  Congrats on the births.

FoxyGrandpa's suggestion of using a breeder net for the time being is a good idea. Eventually though, you'll have to get another tank for them as your 10g will become overcrowded.

I have had fry now for a month in my 33long. I only have nine. I guess she either ate the rest or had a small group. Now those nine are growing just fine and have left them in my display tank. They graze on algae and eat flakes like their mom. I just hope I can get them out before they have their own kids

They do need an established tank with good filtration and heat to survive. My suggestion would be to let them grow a while and either set up another small tank for them as they grow or catch them and take them to a pet store.

I wont post this in a separate thread but will if the moderators would like. But with that many babies, what would you do with them. Will pet stores buy them or take them at all? I have one female and one male with two male guppies and although I dont look forward to my daughter seeing the babies being eaten I also dont want to be over run with a million babies. (we actually had no intention of getting a female and I think the store did not realize they had one as they say they only have male guppies, I would guess they do the same with mollies. but she is definately a female, anal fin no little gonopodium.)
