Different Molly?

I recently got a new Dalmation Molly for my tank. I had one previously but it died. The new one seems to be either much older or sick. It has yellow spots all over its body, doesn't move much and hasn't eaten. It looks slightly bloated too. I've only had it for 2 days and it was in this condition from the store, Petsmart. I was wondering if this is a different species of Molly since it has yellow spots on its skin, or if its sick. And if it is sick what should I do. I have a 2 gallon auxiliary tank that I can quarantine it in if it needs medication.

my balloon mollie is white but has yellow spots, it could be nothing, but it could also be illness.

do you have readings for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate? also, it would be a good idea to quarantine. i always recommend QT for any new fish to prevent any disease they may have from infecting your main tank.

I would most definitly QT him and he might of had an illness from the store because petsmart has one filtration system. If he's not eating or anything and he ends up dying dont worry you have a 2 week warrenty. Next time look at all the fish at Petsmart and check for any diseases because if you see diseases on any fish that means all the fish are going to get that disease since there is only one filtration system. Hope You The Best!

The fish wasn't sick, It was pregnant! After I moved it to my auxiliary tank, it released its fry! I have about 30 in the quarantine tank. Im not really sure what to do now. When they get bigger I need to figure out how to seperate them so they don't breed again. Anybody have any advice?

lol, that's definitely an issue with livebearers. the only way to keep them from breeding is to have all males or all females (but sometimes you'll get the females and they'll be pregnant already! so the only SURE way is to get all males). there have been lots of threads recently on breeding mollies/guppies/platies, so just click on the new post button and look around a bit. you can leave them in the tank that everyone else is in as long as there are LOTS of hiding places. you should feed them either newly hatched brine shrimp or very very finely crushed flake food.

Thanks! I have been giving the fry some powered flakes and they seem to be eating it. Does anyone know where there are diagrams showing the the differences between males and females?

You won't be able to tell with your fry for about 6 weeks. Then, look at their tail (not the fin part, the fleshy part, close to their belly). If they have a round-ish fin, it's a girl. If they don't, but they have a long thin fin from the middle of their belly, they're boys.

I like this as I just purchased a few females for my tank because I felt bad for the males. I started out with 3 females in my tank (I let my husband pick the fish) and they all dies when giving birth. I think this was because of the male to female ratio. Either way, I got tired of watching my males go after each other. It got bad enough they were doing T formations with each other.
