Hi fadthefish,
I can't answer you question about the balloon molly, but hopefully I can help you keep your fish alive.

Your aqaurium info says you know about the nitrogen cycle, but your post says the tank is a week old.
How did you cycle the tank?
While your waiting for someone to answer your question, please read this:

http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm

Good luck with your tank, and post some pics, we love them here.

hi lucy

i know i haven't cycled my tank yet but i know all about the nitrogen cycle so i am trying to avoid any prblems by keeping the ammonia level to a minimmum. i even got some old gravel used in a tank from the pet store.

thanks for the link i have already read that article and it helped me alot.

i have some pics in my gallery if you would like to see them.

Great The used gravel should help seed your tank.

Keep up with the water changes, be careful of anything that claims to lock the ammonia, those products will starve your bacteria.
Prime is a good water conditioner because it detoxifies the ammonia for 24 till your next water change.

Edit: You have beautiful fish. I'm sorry I can't help with your original question.

you will know because pregnant livebearer girls will get a dark spot near the anal fin and also become square-ish around that area. It is called the "gravid spot"

thanks guys for the help

however i had a little accident or sould i say big huge accident
when i was going to feed the fishes the cover of the food can slipd out and a huge amount of food went to the tank so i had to clean the floating flakes with the net and i removed the gravel because most of the food is traped between them.

i don't have any other tank to put the fishes in and i had to clean the filter with tap water.

so i really need any advices to prevent any of the fishes to die. if experinced anything like this before or you know how to deal with it please tell me

Oh no! That happened to someone else too, except it was their 2 yr old decided the fish were very hungry. lol

Do you have a gravel vacuum? That would be your best bet to get most of it cleaned up. It would also help with a good water change.

When you cleaned the filter with tap water, was it treated tap water? It's my underdtanding, someone correct me, if this is wrong, that chlorine can kill the bacteria.

Yes, chlorine kills bacteria... always use dechlorinated water to rinse your filters!

I've done more damage and killed more fry by trying to move them to a qt tank. I just leave them in the tank with all the other mollies and make sure they have places to hide. I don't think I've lost any fry to hungry mamas.

I've been hoping my balloon molly would have fry because she's so adorable and my favorite fish. No luck for my girl. I bet the fry from baloon mollies are adorable. I hope you'll be able to get some pics.

If your patient you can catch the fry. Both batches of fry my mollies have had I spent a few hours catching about 15-20 fry. They all survived. Its easier to feed them fry specific foods when they are in a breeder net or Q. tank.
The first batch of fry came during my first cycle. I lost almost all of them when the nitrites kicked in. Just FYI.
