Should I Get A Balloon Molly?

Hello

We gave our naughty female Dalmation Molly to the LFS and we were thinking what type of molly to replace her. I'm thinking of a black molly, but we already have 2(1 male and 1 female) in our tank. The probably only type of molly left is the balloon molly. They look nice, but I heard that their balloon-shaped bodies is artificial and the mollies don't like it. Should I get one? Or is it bad?

Thanks in advance!

whatever type of molly it is, make sure it is a female. The male wont pester the lone female all day long. I have a few ballon mollies and the females gave birth to normal fry. only 1 day old, but time will tell if they will have issues.

Thanks!

But many people say that the balloon-shape of these mollies are artificially made and the mollies don't like it. Does buying a balloon molly similar to buying dyed fish(which I think is cruel)?

Thanks in advance!

Balloon mollies are great fish and you don't have to worry about them getting to big or breeding out too much.

I know that balloon mollies are lovely fish. i enjoyed them when i kept them. Also i agree that it must be a female or else the male will harass the one and more so if you get another male.

Hi Lyndatu
to answer your question on the balloon shape of those mollies, I have read that they are in fact genetically engineered to take that shape. I do not know how it is done, but it is a form of scoliosis ... and it is not good for the fish.
I think there were threads on this subject somewhere here. Hopefully Dave or Dino can give you the information on that for you... and be able to correct me if im wrong..
