Mollies at top of tank

I have two balloon belly mollies - I know better now --

anyway, when they aren't nibbling on plants (this is their most active pasttime), cleaning the decorations or admiring their reflections, they even clean the snails' shells - they seem to be drinking water from the surface and then will spit out bubbles. My larger one likes to hangout around the filter flow and it is like she/he is eating whatever is floating on the surface. My ammonia is 0, my nitrites are 0 and there is trace of nitrate (sorry my strip show it less than 20 but more than 0.) The temp varies from 78 to 80. Today it is almost 80 degress outside and I had to turn AC on so aquarium is staying 80. The only problems I have are at feeding time when Pudgy (the large silver) will not let Spots (the smaller dalmation) eat in peace. I have an airator and an HOB filter. Is this just normal molly behavior? They seem fine. Pudgy is quite the beggar now and if I lean my head against the tank, she comes and gets as close as possible to me - I am sure for a handout.

It is February and you turned the AC on on behalf of your fish. Nice. Here on the east coast my mollies have been known to exhibit the same behavior. Distract Pudgy, then feed spots?

my ballon mollies stay on the top as well. Don't normally venture downwards even to chase after food.

Thanks for the info. Mine do go all over the tank but they do spend quite a bit just hanging out at the top. When I come in to turn out the light at around 10 each night, they are both on the bottom with tetras in a back corner like they are bedding down for the night. When I turn on the light in the morning, guess who is wakes up first and is at the sides begging for breakfast? Yep, big momma molly. The other day the stole my frog food out of my hand as I was feeding the frog. I guess they both doing okay then.

My mollies do that too, they go all over the tank but they like to poke their lips and eyes above the surface
