Is Salt Required or Optional in Molly/Gourami Tank

Please weigh in on this contraversial topic. I have not added salt to my new 55g and (touch wood) all seem happy & Healthy. I am on day 11 of my Bio Spira Cycle, and all is going well.

It is my understanding that unless you are interested in breeding, salt is not required.

Besides I think ( hope) I have only males. All fish are active.

Any advice??

Thanks, Val

good morning Val
and congratulations again on your on going project with the 55g tank.
I have also heard that exact same thing. The sailfin mollies or molly in general can live without the salt in the water, and it is used basically when you want to breed them. The Krib that you have also uses some saline in the water as well. But I am not sure about your dwarf gourami, whether or not they would tolerate the saline conditions. So I would be careful of that.
Good luck with your fish and dont forget to post photos asap!!

salt is good for mollies (Im not sure about other fish) but salt is Optional like you said its good for breeding. It also is good if a mollie is sick, you should add a little bit of salt to help the fish recover. I use to add salt for my mollies until i got snails!

It all depends on the molly. It is strongly recommended for the larger, brackish, mexican sailfin molly (P. velifera), but totally optional for the 'regular' sailfin (P. latipinna) or the black molly (P. sphenops).
