Aggressive Female Molly

Hello

I have a female black molly that seems to be very aggressive. I have a very good feeling that she is pregnant. She has a very large stomach and is much larger that the other females. However, anytime the female sees another fish in the tank she chases them for a couple seconds or until she can nip them. I have tried to isolate her in a breeder to get rid of this attitude that she has, however that did not work. Is there something I can do.?

This tank may be a little overcrowded already. Do you have lots of plants or other things to help give the fish places to hide from her, she will also tend to pick where she likes and stay there, not being able to see the others as well, not pick on them, it might help. Good Luck

Re: Aggressive Female Molly

I know that my tank is not over crowded. I am not a newbie with fish tanks. And I know how to tell if fish are stressed because of over crowding. But I don't have ALOT of plants, but I do have some. But why would she be doing this? I keep isolating her.

The way I calculate the fish you currently have at 1" adult fish /gallon, you need to have a minimum of a 60 gallon tank. I certainly did not mean to offend you.

Re: Aggressive Female Molly

Pregnant mollies do get more aggressive, so there is a good chance that your problem is temporary. I have one that is a real bully. The way I deal with that is by distributing food at 2 opposite ends of the tank, and also floating as well as sinking food (she can't be in 2 places at the same time). I also provide the fish with loads and loads and loads of hiding places. Again, she can hunt a victim down in 1 hiding place, not in 15 of them - she can't be everywhere at once.
