Fry - how to treat them

Dear All

My Molly had 10 Fry

I use bottled mineral water in their tank about a 4 liter tank

Have a filter and air supply

I feed them a bit of Fry food twice a day - dipping a toothpic in the water then in the food and back into the tank.

Give them a very small amount of cooked mushed peas every now and then and once a day a very small amount of a home made food mix that I use for the fish in my big tank.

Shrimps, peas, 2 varieties of flakes and a bit of Fry food all mushed up in my coffee grinder.

I have been doing a water change every second day. I take half of the water and strain it through the filtering cloth and then add new mineral water.

Today found 2 of the Fry dead - what am I doing wrong?

Do I need to add all the same products as I would add to my big tank,
Salt, Bio meds, water decontanminator, and dechlorniser.

I thought of keeping them in the small tank until the 18th of July - I depart for Hawaii for a week from the 10th of July and return home to Hong Kong on the 18th of July. My thinking was to put them into the larger tank with the other fish upon my return.

Many thanks

Re: Fry - how to treat them

when we had platy fry, we gave them the same water conditions as in the adult tank. a sponge filter is best for their tank and we cleaned the fry tank more often, changing their water almost every day. i would use treated tap water for the fry and not use the coffee grinder for their food.. tiny particles of coffee could be getting in their food. to make powdered food, we put our food in a little plastic sandwich bag and crushed it with a rolling pin (perhaps you could use the same method with your food mix?). then we would feed the fry a tiny pinch AM and PM. The weaker fry often die off and i wouldn't use any salt or meds in their water, they're pretty delicate for those - i'd just use liquid vitamins.

Yep.. bottled water is not such a great idea for aquarium fish.. treated tap-water is best.
In terms of feeding fry (mine are Mollies, Platies, and Swordtails),I've used First-Bites, brine shrimp and recently, I stumbled on Azoo 9 in 1 Rotifera which is made for egg-bearer fry, but works great with live-bearer fry.

Re: Fry - how to treat them

I use baby brine shrimp for one feeding a day for my fry, the other feeding is crushed flakes. The baby brine shrimp can be your own hatched, or what I use are the frozen ones. I agree you need to do lots of water changes, but the water you usually use should be sufficient. Also, I wouldn't put them in with the community tank for a month or two. They don't really grow that fast, and would be very stressed by being chased by bigger fish.
