Oh that's really sad, Sabi. Am sure I'd react the same. I'd wait for a bit before trying again.
Thanks for the kind words, Michelle. It does sound like we're all having a horrible fish week. I was, until my absolute favorite started to get miraculously better. I can talk about it now as she really seems on the mend. Basically, she's a balloon molly, so really not designed to get babies because of the bent spine). Some females are OK giving birth, mine definitely was not. My boyfriend called me the other day to say that she'd exploded. Literally. He said her side was this sushi-looking gaping wound. Next day, he found fry that was definitely hers (her spitting image). She'd been pregnant forever, and getting bigger and bigger, so we assume that the babies came out from the side, causing the wound. I've put her in the hospital tank with loads of disinfectant and the wound gradually closed up, but started growing fungus. This morning, no sign of fungus, and she comes to greet me again. That was such a close call but I have great hopes now. Of course, we're going on holidays in a week...
That's what it looked like a couple of days ago. Now it's completely cleared.
Aw, poor little thing! I'm glad she's getting better. Balloon Mollies are such cute and awkward looking little things. Just be sure to keep treating her for a while longer even though she seems better just to make sure the bacteria and fungus doesn't develop a resistance and come back.
That's so weird, I've never heard of babies busting through the mother's abdominal wall except in alien movies! I'm amazed she survived at all.
I know. I felt so bad for her. I was really heart-broken as she's my favorite fish, and I didn't know how to help her. I just cannot believe she actually is fighting a fair chance of surviving this.
Thanks for the advice. I was toying with the idea of putting her back in with the others, but you're right. She has to stay in treated water for at least a little while longer.
Most vets recommend medicating for a week PAST the time you think they are all well. I'd give her at least another week on meds and maybe keep her isolated for another week after with just clean water and rest.
Oh I'm thanking the heavens right now. I just can't believe she seems to be doing OK. I was soooo sad. I find this all so unbelievable. I did a lot of internet research on balloon mollies giving birth and the odds were terrible. The number of hits I got that went something like: 'My balloon female has just given birth. She died 3 hours later.' are unbelievable. Selectively breeding mollies to become balloon mollies is very cruel and I didn't know this when I bought her. I figured she was a different species.
Not all of them are not able to give birth, but it's one really common effect of their misshapen bodies: many don't survive it. You had one of the good ones, lucky you!
Hi Arma Glad your molly on the mend. It is hard when we have to do the right thing for our pets, i had to keep my horse in her stable after she was in hospital with colic. She felt better and wanted to be out but she wasn't all clear so had to have stable rest, one very grumpy mare!!!!
How is she now? How are the fry?
yea, it's good to hear she's recovering. i know how that makes you happy. maybe you can put what she's in beside the main tank and she could socialize through the glass.. our daisy would do that when she was in an isolation tank.
Thanks for the kind words, Tazmiche. Yes, I am really relieved. Today, she ate from my hand again. Aaaaw. Gawd I love that little fish. She's soooo nice. I could wax lyrical about her for minutes. OK OK, hours.
Ask my mom... I work really close to where they live, so they get to see a lot more of me than usual (we don't live in the same country), and that's all I'll talk about! I keep asking them: what was it like, when I was little, when we had fish. And they said the same thing as now: you were obsessed with them! I demanded proper funeral ceremonies for the ones who didn't make it, apparently.
Dave: she's right next to the other tank, and it feels like I'm teasing her like that. I was actually thinking of hiding the view of the other fish, as she's always looking at them as if to say: why can't I play?
