18 Gallon Puffer Tank Journal and Pics :)

This week I sent up an 18 gallon puffer tank for my office at work. It is an 18gallon tall aquarium with an eclipse hood and 1 WPG lighting. The substrate is white sand. I have two tall root stump decorations in the tank and lots of plants: java fern, anubias, and vals. I have 5 dwarf puffers in the tank and 1 BN Pleco. The puffs are too young to sex right now, but I have unisex names picked out that will work no matter what gender they end up being. So, meet Scout, Joey, Dakota, Chandler, and Dylan my Dwarf Puffers!!! I have added some pics of them below. Sorry the quality is so bad These little buggers are so dang hard to photograph!

My LFS always has a tank full of them luckily. The guy who was working when I went to get them knows me really well and sold them to me for $2.99 each which was a great deal

Thanks Cesch! Yup all of the plants are low light plants that I have kept in my other tanks for a long time. I just switched them over to this one. The vals are new, but the plant guy at my LFS said that they would work fine (I trust his judgement), and I got the whole bag for $6.99 so can't complain

You really should! I like my plants almost as much as my fish now (Don't worry I said almost, lol). There are plants that will grow in almost no light at all that are super easy to take care of. If you want help planting a tank, let me know

Wow, sounds fun

I thought of the name Dylan because I had a friend named Dylan growing up.

You could always set it up on the floor temporarily. I did that one time. It looked kinda silly but I eventually moved it. The puffs are so cute, you have to get some!

lol, yeah that's true....hmmm....you really shouldn't go putting ideas like that into my head! all i really need for the tank is a new heater, but i do need to check out the hood some more. the lights aren't actually covered by anything but it's supposedly aquarium safe...

Ugh! Today I came into work to check on the tank (we are closed on Sundays) and my BN pleco was dead at the bottom of the tank. He was partially decomposed already which was pretty gross. I was just worried about the ammonia spike that his sitting in there dead might have caused. I don't have a test kit at work, but the puffs seemed fine and eager for their bloodworms, thank goodness! One was curled up on the sand and his coloring was pretty dark, but as soon as I put the food in he perked right up which was good. I am going to keep an eye on things over the next few days though.

Ewwwwww, poor guy. I'd do a waterchange if possible just to be safe. And of course keep an eye out for any nasties spread from the pleco. I hope the puffs didn't nibble on him....
