My first review.
I bought this feeder to make it easier for me to make sure the fish get fed when I'm working late, or need to go out of town for the weekend. I know, I could probably just let them go without for a couple of days. But I'd feel guilty.
I did some checking around here and an that big old interweb thing, and I decided to go with the Eheim feeder.
I used this for about two and half weeks just to be absolutely sure it was going to work when I needed it, and it hasn't missed a beat.
The portions were easy to control using the sliding door on the hopper. With the door slid almost closed for smaller portions, you need to crush the food so it will pass through the opening. Not a big deal, as I do that already for my smaller fish.
Unlike some other feeders, the hopper only rotates when it is actually feeding. Otherwise it returns to the position you see in the photos. The opening is up and away from the water. A single rotation of the hopper only takes about 15-20 seconds. I think this greatly reduces the chance of the opening on the hopper getting clogged by moist flakes.
There is also a small fan built into the unit. It runs when the hopper rotates and helps to circulate air through the hopper to keep the food dry. You can see it in this photo as the small red opening on the back of the feeder on the lower right.
The feeder can be programmed for up to 4 feedings per day with one or two feedings per program. If you select two feedings at a time, it will feed once then again one minute later. The unit is very easy to program. There is also a button for an immediate feeding. You just push the Eheim logo on the top of the unit.
After using this for two and a half weeks, it never clogged even at the very small opening I had it set on. Portions were very consistent. Easy to adjust as well because you just fill the hopper and hit the button to test the portion. No need to wait forever for the hopper to rotate around and dump the food like some other feeders. The food remained dry. No clumping in the hopper or at the hopper opening at all. The batteries should last a long time as the feeder only runs when it's actually time to feed. I read a couple of reviews online where the reviewers were getting months out of a set of batteries.
The only downsides I could think of....
1. It does not clamp to the tank. It needs a surface to sit on. Not a big deal to me because my tank has a cover. But it could be an issue for some.
2. As you can see in the photos, a tiny bit of food does spill onto my tank cover. Not a big deal to me because after a week it was barely enough for a single feeding. I think it's just because the opening into my tank is so small.
All in all...I give it a
