| I just need to vent about this... Okay, I'm sorry, but when I saw this on the PetCo web site, I could feel the rage bubble up inside me... http://www.petco.com/product/14428/A...etta-Bowl.aspx
WHO would keep their fish, ANY fish, in something this cramped and miserable!? First of all, this tank is only 9.5" in diameter -- barely bigger than the miserable little urine cups that they keep bettas in at the store. It can't be more than half a gallon, if that. Secondly, where is the heater? The filter? Bettas NEED these things... it is not optional! And I have seen them sell even smaller bowls at the store than this one... arrgh!!
Animal cruelty on this scale really pushes my buttons. The worst part of it is that the product is getting a 100% recommendation rate and a 4.8 of 5 rating. I can't stand the thought that people are using these things, hanging miserable and depressed fish on the wall like some kind of fancy ornament, to live the rest of their lives in so little space without the proper care and space they deserve. Bettas are living creatures, too darn it!! Anything under a gallon should be outlawed...
Yeah, I'm ranting, I just felt the need to blow off some steam... Last edited by Chief_waterchanger; July 12th, 2008 at 11:09 AM.

| I don't blame you for being angry. I HATE it when I see stuff like this. It is so unfortunate that so many people see fish as ornaments and not as pets!!! |

| No, apparently you can hang it on a nail in the wall.
I'd like to hang people that use these bowls on a nail on the wall...
Thanks for understanding and letting me get it out of my system. @_@ |

| First, that would be a HORRIBLE way to keep any fish.
Second,I keep my Bettas in 5 gallon Ecplise tanks, heated, and filtered. The thing I don't understand is that when I bought these tanks, they had pictures of the tanks on the box, with at least 10 fish in these little 5 gallon tanks! On one of the self promoting pamphlets included with the tank, they went on to say that with a Bio Wheel, you could keep more fish in a small tank, than with a conventional filter,or something along those lines. These are sold by Marineland. That is supposed to be a company that should be promoting GOOD fishkeeping. Not cramming a dozen fish into a 5 gallon tank!In my opinion, these tanks are only good for a single betta, nothing else!It just seems to me that even the so called reputible companies, are still about the ALMIGHTY DOLLAR!
Sorry,now I'm venting! |

| It's refreshing to see that other people get as fired up as I do about inhumane treatment of animals. Maybe someone else was, politely, to please leave the Pet Company store like I was. |

Sorry, now I'm venting! | Yes, I know... they have like 5 pearl gouramis in the picture...
I have also seen this one and thought exactly the same.
Have you guys seen those LAVARIUMS? I think it is even more cruel than this! it does not even have substrate and the fish can barely turn around!
Cant we report these things? |

| Well, since we're on the topic, here's another one they sell:
I can just see these uneducated potential fish keepers going into the store and thinking, "Hey, bettas! They can live in a little vase and don't need any of that fancy/expensive/complicated equipment. Just put them in a cute bowl and viola!" -- it makes me so sad, because I know that most people, once they realized how cruel this is, they wouldn't keep their fishies in these inhumane containers. The bowl is really cute, I admit... but it isn't a living space! Education is key... and yes, it should be illegal to advertise toxically overstocked fish tanks and bowls that I wouldn't even keep a snail in. |

| I understand being upset about things like that, and I in no way agree with the people that make those things, but please keep the language under control. The unncessary language has been removed and supplimented with less inflammatory words, so it has been taken care of, but as angry as we get about those things we must remember that the children on this site do not need to read certain things... as well as any adults that foul language may offend.
Thanks for your continuing cooperation with the moderating team. |

| I am not sure if I was the one who did it, but if I was, I am sorry. I was posting a lot yesterday, so I don't really remember what I said. I would never intentially post something that I thought was inappropriate though. |

I think that, because the younger folks on this forum tend to be pretty mature, it's easy to forget that they are young.
I've found that it's a good idea to look over my post after I've hit the "Submit" button, just to verify that I haven't said anything inappropriate. |

| Don't worry, it wasn't you! I remember what it was; I never considered that word offensive personally, but I can see how some people would not want to see it. So... sorry! I didn't think about it... but I will in the future.
Easy for a bunch of animal lovers to get really steamed about this topic, too. :/ |

| So has anyone seen this one?
"A vendor on Qingdao's modern waterfront holds up the souveneir he is selling, a goldfish in a sealed polythene bag, in the shape of a heart, and featuring one of the Olympic mascots on the front."
I heard about this one about a month ago. If you google goldfish olympic china you can see a couple of websites that tell about it. They are selling these "keychains" to kids as souvenirs because the goldfish is supposed to be good luck. Why couldn't they put little plastic goldfish in instead of real live (for a few minutes) fish... |

| There was a thread going around about the goldfish thing a few weeks ago. I just don't understand why anyone would even want one of those! |

| I actually received a betta bowl from them as a premium that was made by AZOO and was a lovely LITTLE thing that holds 4 ounces of water and is about 2 inches across where the water is held and 2 inches high and V shaped tank as it is heart shaped. I wish I still had the picture of it next to my computer screen but it was one lost with the pictures when my computer before this one melted down. The betta would have had to hold its head out of the water or tail over the edge of the cup. I wrote them a sassy note and asked them why they were giving them as premiums, wouldn't anyone be stupid enough to purchase them?
I do not blame you for being upset, but I have actually seen this type of thing in an 8 gallon size that has holes in the back that are made for allowing heaters and small sponge filters to be inserted for tropical fish and then hung on the wall with very strong hooks. I think those while they would not be the best would still meet the requirement for life for most fish. This particular model though meets no one's requirements for anything but inhumane. The problem with this type of ornamental thing is people who go for this type of thing very often fail to do the maintenance involved in the care of the thing. They are more likely to want the fish for thier fun value than an actual companion or pet.
