LOL..I've have both sand and Gravel and I prefer the sand. It's way easier to keep clean because all the waste stays on top and doesn't work it's way to the bottom like gravel. IMO pool filter sand is your best option. I just use a fertilizer for my plants and you can use tabs that you stick in the sand close to the root too. I love mine. Good luck with it.

It's heavy enough to stay at the bottom. The filter doesn't suck it up. I know some sands are VERY fine and can be sucked up off the bottom. This can't..I wouldn't leave the filter going if your going to be flinging the sand around, I turn off the filter for that but it settles very quickly and then I turn it back on. Alot of people do use pool filter sand. Do a search on the forum for "pool filter sand". I'm sure there will more info there too.

    Hi,
I used Pool Filter sand. You can get it at a pool supply store or Lowes or Home Depot..It's super cheap too, very fine and soft so it won't scratch the bellies of bottom dwelling fish like cories or loaches. I paid $13.00 fora 50lb bag of it. It was a higher quaility sand which I would recommend. It was super clean .
