Yes, Tetraodon nigroviridis is the green spotted puffer. Often they're called leopard puffers, but they're just GSP. You could have 2 in a 55 gal, but they're brackish. If you want freshwater, I'd go with the dwarf puffers. If you plant the tank heavily and provide plenty of hiding places then you could technically fit up to 11, but I personally wouldn't put more than 5, because they are very territorial and need their space, or you could end up with dead puffers.

Hm... there's several that go by leopard. Do you happen to know the scientific name? Tetraodon ____?

True leopard puffers aren't generally traded for aquaria. Usually this just refers to green spotted puffers. Do you happen to know which kind they really are?

If they were dwarf puffers they'd be fine in the setup you want.
But if you really want green spotted puffers, they are definitely worth it. Mine are my favorite fish and they are so much fun.

They may be small when babies, but those puffers get 6". Really you can only have 2 in a 55g. And they are not freshwater, they're brackish. Cories can't deal with the salt that the puffers need.

    Hi.
Puffers in general are not community fish. You might be able to keep them with other fish, but it depends on the fish's personality.
With dwarf puffers I've heard that you can keep cories and otos. I haven't had any experience with this myself, but I am going to get a dwarf with some cories as soon as possible.
With green spotted puffers, which are brackish fish, there are several species that might work, but there's no guarantees. For example, I keep my two GSPs with 3 mollies. One of the mollies got a swim bladder injury from being bullied by another molly, and a few days later I found him being eaten by one of my puffers.
So, basically, it's not impossible that they can live with other fish, but there's definitely no guarantees. They will be best in a species only setup, usually a specimen only setup. If you put anything with them, don't get too attached, because they can be fine for months or years and then suddenly become puffer food.
Those are the most common fresh/brackish puffers. Figure 8 puffers are also pretty common. They are low-end brackish, and they would have the same tankmate requirements/cautions as the green spotted puffer.
Puffers make some of the best pets and are tons of fun!
If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask!

I am pleased to say all my fish survived the hurricane. I'm glad to hear yours did as well.
