Depends on how much the filter aerates the water. I tend to err on the side of too much aeration when it comes to puffers. I have a small airstone in with my DP, and a bubble wall across the whole tank with my bigger puffers

Oh, that's not the first time I've heard "feeling bad for the fry". 29 gallons worth might be a tad over the top

I have a couple of mollies now and they are doing great.

Hopefully the danios work out better than the neons did.
I just got 5 danios today, so we shall see how it goes.

Doesn't petting a fish sound weird?

I'm not sure. If there's something in my feeding or other circumstances that's killing them, I might settle on another fish. If the last one hangs in there, then I'll be more likely to suspect they were sick coming in. I'll let you know

Sorry to hear about your Molly. I look at them in the LFS and I do like them.

My personal favorites are the Dwarf Gourami (he lets me pet him) and the Ghost Shrimp.

No problem. Hey one thing I forgot to tell you is that when you put in all your rocks in the tank you are going to have some cloudiness in the water for 3 to four dates depending on the filter that you are using. I got a Emperor 400 on my 55 gal and took about 4 days to be clear again. Are u buying the rock for a cichlids tank? If you do make sure the rocks are stable. Mine guys like to get the gravel from under the rocks and this makes the rocks to shift a little. I bought some underwater epoxy. Gotta tell you is not cheap. A stick about 5 inches long cost me $25. This stuff is not harmful to the fish and you can put it on with your tank full of water and fish. You can use aquarium silicone but the tank gotta be empty. Good luck.
