Good morning Isis It could be diatoms. Unsightly, but I don't think it really hurts anything. There's several threads on the forum about it.
Here's a great resource for figuring out what kind of algae you have.: http://www.plantgeek.net/article_viewer.php?id=9

    About the bettas...
Unfortunately i dont know much abt pet stores in JHB. I can tho, give you websites or email addresses of petstores i think are good with their fish- if you want.
Also i know of one or two breeders, not quite sure if they breed betta splendens or the other vatiety (forgot the name) and i THINk one of them is in JHB. Nonetheless, they are active on this forum. One i think is Dale and if you check around you'l find the other guy. http://www.guppiesforyuppies.co.za/c...s.asp?TID=3810

    I Isis.
I would think, yes you can keep neons with discus. Generally bigger fish who grow up with smaller fish tend to leave smaller fish alone. So unless these discus are around adult size and havnt been kept with smaller fish, it should be fine.

I don't know enough about them to say. Slug or maybe Jess (I think she keeps them) would know.
