    Hi Hatchet
Unfortunately one of the 2 swordtails has died. Due to stress I think as the water parameters are fine.
Should I introduce another or look for a different species of fish and will the other one be okay alone.

    Regards
    Boonie

    Hatchet,

I know that when I start adding fish to my aquarium, I need to not add too many so that I don't throw it into a mini cycle. I wouldn't normally consider putting 8 fish in at once, but do I need to put my school of hatchets in at the same time so that they don't jump out? Or should I put them in 4 at a time since they're relatively small? If I put them in separately, how long should I wait in between the groups? Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi Hatchet
I talked to the place where I got the Swordtails and they are willing to have them back if necessary but to be honest I would like to see how it goes. The swordtails appear to be coming out little by little and are hiding well when they need to, so it might be aright. Thanks for the plant website, very excellent!! Will take a list to my Pet Shop if the kids give me time to look at my options. Apparently the shop has a list of plants they can get in New Zealand..cool.
You recommended either the Bristlenose or clown Pleco. Is there any major reason? I'll look up the details. Again thanks for every thing.
    Boonie.

Yeah I havn't been on in a while, I've been practicing for mlg(I'm a professional gamer) so I've been on the xbox quite a bit. But the fish are doing wonderful. The gouramis aren't really getting much bigger though. I wonder if its my fault?

    Hi Hatchet
Found the fish, not jumped out thank goodness. It was hungry and came out for a look while I was feeding the others. Both Swordtails are hiding away still; otherwise being chased almost constantly by the Serpae as described before.

I checked the water: 0 am and nitrite; 7 ph and 3 nitrate. So pretty good. The night before the I brought the extra fish I did a 1/4 water change. Before the change the water was the same except nitrate was 5.

The Swordtails have a few places to hide so I'm hoping things will settle. Do you think I should add more Swordtails due to them being out numbered... don't want to over load the tank though. The black neons are alot happier and schooling nicely with the 4 new ones.

Plan was to add my 3 neons and a argae eater and then start concentrating on different types of plants but may have to return these Swordtails. Well see in a week like you suggest.

    Thanks again.

    Hey hatchethaven,
I'm soon to be buying a much larger tank (only have a 6 gal. with 4 small hatchets and a couple of cory cats right now), at least 20 gal. How many hatchets do you think would be comfortable in it? I can always read those facts, but you have such experience with hatchets that I thought I'd ask you.
Also, I read that hatchets like lots of plants to swim around, especially cabomba. Have you found this to be true? Do you think that false plants would suffice, or would either a mixture of real and fake or completely real plants be the best thing?
    Thanks!

    Hi Hatchet

I went out and brought 2 male swordtails and 4 Black Neons for my tank today. The Swordtails have now gone into hiding, one behind my filter the other I simply can't find. The 7 Serpae Tetra's who appear quiet keen to chase them and are stressing them out. . I don't have another tank, is there a way we can make peace? Will the situation in the tank settle or do I need to return them if I can find them?

Thought I needed to talk with you directly. I would greatly appreciate any advice. Please see aquarium info for water info.

Hey hatchethaven...I'm going to be establishing a tank and would LOVE to have hatchets. I've read a bunch of your posts with pointers, but I'd really appreciate if you'd check out my thread and give my some pointers on the tank mates that I'm considering. As an update to what's on there already, the kissing gourami won't be moving to the new tank, I'm finding a new home for her, so she won't have hatchet snacks! Only my powder blue and swordtail will be moving...everything else is up for debate. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: sorry, here's the link http://www.fishlore.com/fishforum/me...-new-tank.html
