Good morning, Kate.
I understand where you're coming from. I had tried to soften my water but I just finally gave up because my water is so hard. Cardinal tetras are a fish I would love to have but I think they prefer softer water. I guess I can do the same thing as you and watch them when I'm at the LFS. -
